How to use Alipay in China with a foreign bank card

Short answer

You can prepare Alipay before travelling by registering with your usual phone number and linking an eligible foreign bank card. You do not need a mainland Chinese bank account or phone number for this payment route. Finish setup at home, keep access to verification messages, and carry a separate way to pay. A linked card does not guarantee that every transaction will succeed. Ant Group's visitor payment explanation.

What you are setting up

Alipay, 支付宝, is an app you can use to pay participating merchants. In this guide, purchases draw on a foreign bank card linked to your account.

Wallet-balance payments and Alipay+ partner wallets are separate routes. Do not apply a partner wallet's fee statement to your linked-card purchase. Alipay's mainland payment guide.

1. Gather the details you will need

Have your phone, passport and your own bank card ready. You will need access to the phone number used for registration, including its SMS messages. Keep that number usable during the trip, even if a separate travel eSIM supplies your internet connection. Shanghai's payment setup guidance.

Before linking the card, confirm its overseas payment settings with the issuing bank. Ask how it sends purchase approvals while you are abroad. A banking app notification and an SMS code are different things; knowing which your bank uses helps you prepare the right connection.

Card-brand support also does not guarantee approval by every issuing bank. China's 2025 official visitor guidance says the issuer must verify a linked card and directs unsuccessful users to the payment provider or bank. MOFCOM guide, section 7.2.3.

2. Register and add your card

  1. Download the Alipay app from your phone's official app store.
  2. Start registration with your phone number, including the correct country code, and complete the prompts.
  3. Open the account area labelled "Me", then the bank-card section. Follow the instructions to add your card.
  4. Enter the card details requested by the app and complete any bank approval or identity checks it requires.

These are the registration and card-linking steps described by Shanghai's July 2026 guide. Its screens may differ from your app version. Read each prompt before submitting, particularly when it asks for identity documents. Shanghai's Alipay guide.

Use your own details consistently. Shanghai's payment guidance says the cardholder name must match the registered account name. If your name appears differently across your passport and card, ask support how to enter it rather than trying several invented versions. Name-matching guidance.

You have completed the useful preparation when the card appears in your account and no setup request remains unresolved. This is not proof of a successful purchase in China. Make your first ordinary merchant payment when you have time to check the result, rather than when a train is about to leave.

3. Pay a merchant

There are two common ways to pay. The merchant may ask you to scan their code, or scan the payment code on your phone. Shanghai's current Alipay guide describes both methods and the choice between a linked card and wallet balance. Alipay payment methods.

If you scan the merchant's code, read the recipient name and any amount shown. Enter the purchase amount if required. Choose the intended linked card and review the total before confirming.

If the cashier scans your code, first confirm the amount with them, then open your payment code in Alipay. Afterwards, check the payment result in your own app and let the cashier confirm receipt. Keep that screen available until you have collected your purchase.

If the result is unclear, check the transaction record before paying again. A pending bank notification alone does not tell you whether the merchant received the money.

Merchant payments are different from personal transfers

Alipay's foreign-card route supports everyday spending in mainland China. Its official guide excludes personal transfers, red packets and financial services such as investments or insurance. A red packet, 红包, is a money gift sent through the app. Alipay's foreign-card restrictions.

Illustrative example: you successfully pay a restaurant, then cannot send money to a friend's account. Those are different payment types. The failed transfer does not by itself mean the linked card has stopped working. Ask the restaurant for its normal merchant payment method when paying a bill.

Understand the fee before confirming

Check the current charging terms and the total shown for your payment. China's official visitor guidance says payment limits and charges vary between payment products, and directs users to the product's own prompts and service agreement. A fee quoted in an older travel guide may not describe your transaction. MOFCOM's payment guidance, section 7.2.3.

Before authorising payment, confirm the purchase amount, the selected card and any displayed service fee or discount. If the total is unclear, ask the cashier to wait while you check the app's explanation. Keep the completed transaction record so you can compare it with your card statement later.

Your bank's costs are separate. The card network and issuer determine foreign-card conversion, with the final result on your card statement. Ask your bank about any foreign-transaction fee as well. Alipay's exchange-rate explanation.

Shanghai's July 2026 payment guide lists regulatory maximums of US$5,000 per transaction and US$50,000 per year for linked international cards. Those are ceilings, not a promise that your bank or account will approve that amount. Current published payment limits.

The cashier has no confirmed paymentReview your transaction record with the cashier before another attempt. Use your backup if the issue remains unresolved.

The issuer is the right contact for a rejected bank authorisation; Alipay handles account or app questions. Its official mainland guide lists overseas support at +86 571 2688 6000. Keep the error, transaction reference, amount and time ready. Alipay support, issuer-verification guidance.

For a refund, keep the original transaction reference and ask the merchant to confirm the refund against that purchase. Ask Alipay about its transaction status and your bank about the card posting. Do not assume they update simultaneously.

Carry a backup you can actually use

Carry your physical card and some RMB cash for situations where the app, phone or authorisation fails. Shanghai's current guide says visitors can withdraw RMB at machines displaying the relevant card-network logo or use authorised currency-exchange services. Direct card acceptance should be checked with the cashier. Shanghai's card and cash guidance.

Before you close this page, finish registration, check the linked card and save the support number. Then complete the China connectivity checklist, including how you will receive any bank approvals after landing.
