China entry requirements: what to check for your passport and route
Short answer
China's entry rules depend on your passport, visit purpose, dates and route. As checked on 12 September 2026, ordinary UK and Australian passports are covered by a conditional 30-day visa waiver through the end of 2026. US ordinary passports are not on that general waiver list, but US, UK and Australian nationals appear on the separate 240-hour transit list. NIA visa-waiver list, NIA transit rules

Write down five details before checking a policy
Use the passport you will actually present. Where you live, where you bought the flight and which country you searched from do not establish passport eligibility.
- Record the passport nationality and type, including whether it is an ordinary, emergency or other travel document.
- Check its expiry date.
- Write the purpose of the trip in plain language, such as tourism, a family visit or employment.
- Record the mainland arrival and departure dates.
- List the full flight or other transport route, including connections immediately before and after mainland China.
Keep this note beside the official policy. It makes an enquiry much more useful than asking an airline whether "China is visa-free."
Compare US, UK and Australian ordinary passports
| Passport | General short-visit waiver | Separate transit option |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Not included in the current unilateral 30-day list | Included in the 240-hour nationality list, with route and other conditions |
| United Kingdom | Up to 30 days for specified purposes; policy runs from 17 February through 31 December 2026 | Included in the 240-hour nationality list |
| Australia | Up to 30 days for specified purposes; extension runs through 31 December 2026 | Included in the 240-hour nationality list |
The UK notice covers business, tourism, visiting family or friends, exchanges and transit. Australia's notice covers the same broad short-visit purposes. Both require an ordinary passport and compliance with the stated conditions. Chinese Embassy in the UK, Chinese Embassy in Australia
A US traveller planning an ordinary return holiday should check the visa application route unless another specific exemption applies. The fact that a UK travelling companion can use the general waiver does not transfer that permission to the rest of the group. NIA country list
For travel beginning in 2027, look for a new announcement. The verified UK and Australian notices do not establish an extension beyond 2026.
Understand the 30-day waiver
The official FAQ requires an ordinary passport valid for the intended stay. Other travel documents, including emergency documents, do not qualify under this particular waiver. It recommends carrying documents that explain your visit, such as accommodation bookings, flight details or an invitation. Embassy visa-free entry FAQ
The stay begins counting on the day after entry. For example, arrival on 5 October makes 6 October day one; check your permitted departure date against the entry record rather than doing last-minute arithmetic at the airport. NIA counting rule
A longer planned visit needs the appropriate visa in advance. Work, formal study and news reporting require their own assessment and are outside the ordinary short-visit waiver. Border inspection still determines admission. Embassy visa-free entry FAQ
For a trip crossing the policy's year-end boundary, give the embassy both your arrival and departure dates and ask which rule governs that itinerary. Do not silently assume the expiry date either cancels an already granted stay or authorizes a new entry after it.
Keep 240-hour transit separate from a return holiday
The NIA's 20 August 2026 policy lists 57 eligible nationalities and 65 designated ports across 24 provincial-level regions. Travellers need an ordinary passport and confirmed onward tickets to a third country or region; movement is limited to permitted areas. Current NIA transit policy
Consider these route shapes, purely to understand the onward-travel condition:
| Route | What to examine |
|---|---|
| United States → Shanghai → United States | Returns to the same country; this is not the third-country transit pattern |
| United States → Shanghai → Japan | Has the third-country pattern; passport, port, timing and onward-entry checks still remain |
Connections matter. Write down each actual leg rather than reducing a multi-stop ticket to its first and last city.
The NIA's detailed conditions specify at least three months' travel-document validity and calculation from midnight following entry. They also require compliance with the onward destination's entry requirements. These transit conditions differ from the general waiver's passport-validity wording. NIA detailed transit conditions
Before booking around transit, open the current policy's port-and-area table and check every planned mainland stop. Confirm the itinerary with the carrier and, for unresolved details, the immigration service hotline, 12367. A qualifying nationality alone does not settle the application.
A 24-hour connection has its own conditions
The NIA also describes transit of up to 24 hours for travellers with valid documents and confirmed onward international transport who remain in the port's restricted area. Leaving that area requires a temporary entry permit. A long layover does not automatically permit a sightseeing trip. NIA 24-hour transit rules
If you need a visa, start with the office responsible for your residence
For applicants within the Chinese Embassy in Washington's jurisdiction, the official procedure begins with the new online application system. Upload the requested material, wait for the "Passport to be submitted" status, then follow the passport-submission instructions.
The embassy identifies L visas as the tourism category and specifies more than six months' remaining passport validity and at least two blank visa pages in its application requirements. Those are visa-application conditions, not a universal description of every visa-free pathway. Chinese Embassy in the US application guide
Check the consular jurisdiction before applying. If your residence falls under another office, use that office's current instructions; a completed online form is not itself a visa.
Keep the documents usable after arrival
Save an offline copy of your accommodation address, onward booking and relevant official policy. Carry the original passport and any required visa or permit, and review your admitted stay before leaving border inspection if anything is unclear.
Hotels handle accommodation registration. When staying in a private home, you or your host must complete registration with local public security within 24 hours of arrival at the accommodation. Ask the host which local process applies rather than assuming a nationwide online service covers Shanghai. NIA accommodation-registration guidance
Your next step is to match the five details at the start of this guide to one official pathway. Resolve an uncertain passport type, trip purpose or route before committing to non-refundable travel.
