Three days in Shanghai: a practical first-visit itinerary
Short answer
Spend your first day around Yu Garden, the Bund and East Nanjing Road; your second in Pudong at Shanghai Museum East and Lujiazui; and your third around Wukang Road, Anfu Road and Jing'an. Swap the order to avoid Monday's Yu Garden closure and Tuesday's museum closure. This plan assumes three full sightseeing days and leaves room for meals, rest and transport between stops.

Put the days on your calendar before booking
For an arrival day, use only the afternoon or evening section. For a departure day, work backwards from your flight or train, including the journey to the correct airport or station.
Visit lengths and transfer allowances below are editorial estimates, not measured routes or live traffic predictions. Your ticket's entry window takes priority over the suggested times.

Yu Garden's current visitor page lists Monday closure except statutory holidays. Shanghai Museum East closes on Tuesdays except national holidays. Day 1: Yu Garden, the Bund and East Nanjing Road
Around 09:00, enter the garden
Start at Yuyuan Garden station, 豫园, served by Metro Lines 10 and 14. Head to the garden entrance rather than stopping at the first shopping lane with a Yuyuan sign. Yu Garden transport directions
Yu Garden is the ticketed classical garden. The surrounding bazaar is a separate shopping and dining area. Walking through the shops does not mean you have visited the garden, and a garden ticket is not a purchase for a night tour or a seasonal lantern event.
The current daytime hours are 09:00 to 16:30, with last admission at 16:00. Adult admission is CNY 40 in April through June and September through November, or CNY 30 in the other months. Save the South Gate address, 豫园老街279号, 279 Yuyuan Old Street. Allow 90 minutes to two hours inside. The garden warns of uneven paths, steps and slippery surfaces in wet weather. Garden entrances, visitor guidance
Around 12:00, eat before heading to the waterfront
Soup dumplings are one possible lunch. Nanxiang Steam Bun Restaurant, 南翔馒头店, is listed at 87 Yuyuan Road in the city's current food guide. Check the menu and queue before committing; the itinerary does not depend on eating at that particular restaurant. Shanghai's xiaolongbao guide
From the garden area, work east towards the Huangpu waterfront, then north along the Bund. Allow 30 to 45 minutes for the initial walk, navigation and road crossings, with longer for photos or slower walkers. If you need a break, take it before beginning the riverfront section.
Spend the afternoon on the Bund
Walk the riverside and look across at tomorrow's towers. The city's own routes group Yu Garden and the Bund together, avoiding a cross-city journey. Shanghai tourism route guidance
Turn inland along East Nanjing Road for dinner or a metro ride back. For evening waterfront views, have an early dinner and return afterwards.
For heavy rain, replace the long waterfront walk with an indoor afternoon. Shanghai History Museum at 325 West Nanjing Road is an option on its open days; the official tourism listing gives Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:00, with holiday exceptions. Day 2: Shanghai Museum East and Lujiazui
Around 10:00, choose a few museum galleries
Go to Shanghai Museum East, 上海博物馆东馆, at 1952 Century Avenue. Take Line 2 to Shanghai Science and Technology Museum station, 上海科技馆, and use Exit 8, then follow directions to the B1 East Gate near Dingxiang Road. Individual visitors currently do not need a general admission reservation. Bring your original passport for the identity check; the museum requires original valid identification, and the city's museum guide explicitly includes passports. Allow two to three hours and choose galleries that interest you. Bronzes, ceramics and painting are a useful starting selection; trying to see every room can use the entire day. Leave space for lunch afterwards. Museum collection guide
Do not substitute the People's Square branch assuming it has the same displays. During the Americas exhibition, 9 July 2026 to 14 November 2027, that branch hosts no other exhibitions. Its own instructions direct visitors seeking permanent displays to Museum East. People's Square branch notice
Around 14:00, return along Line 2 to Lujiazui
Walk back to the station and ride Line 2 towards central Shanghai, getting off at Lujiazui, 陆家嘴. Budget 35 to 50 minutes between leaving the museum and reaching your next stop, including the two station walks. This is a planning allowance, not the train's running time.
Spend the afternoon around the towers and riverside. Pick at most one major paid attraction here. If you want a high view, consider Shanghai Tower's Top of Shanghai Observatory; its operator identifies the observatory on floor 118 and lists recognised online sales channels. If the towers disappear into low cloud, use the afternoon for art or a long lunch. Keep the purchase flexible where the ticket terms allow it.
Museum of Art Pudong is an indoor alternative at 2777 Binjiang Avenue, 滨江大道2777号. Its posted hours are 10:00 to 21:00, last entry 20:00; its visitor page instructs ticket buyers to complete the visit appointment through the official WeChat account. Finish with dinner in Lujiazui or return to your hotel's neighbourhood.
Day 3: Wukang Road, Anfu Road and Jing'an
Around 09:30, begin at Wukang Mansion
Use Jiao Tong University station, 交通大学, on Lines 10 and 11 as your starting point, then walk towards Wukang Mansion at the junction of Wukang Road and Middle Huaihai Road. Save the building as a separate map destination before leaving the station. Area metro access, Wukang Road and Anfu Road
Walk north along Wukang Road, then turn east onto Anfu Road. Allow the morning for the streets and one cafe stop. Keep to public areas, leave residential entrances clear and treat house museums as separate visits requiring their own opening checks.

After lunch, move to Jing'an
Continue towards Changshu Road station, 常熟路, and take Line 7 to Jing'an Temple, 静安寺. Allow 45 to 60 minutes from finishing lunch in the Anfu Road area to arriving outside the temple, including your station walk and navigation. Treat entering the temple as optional; this plan does not assume an unverified ticket price or last-entry time. The surrounding area gives you an easy place to stop for a meal or continue east along West Nanjing Road. In sustained rain, swap this day with the museum day if the opening calendar permits. If it does not, shorten Wukang Road and spend more time inside around West Nanjing Road, rather than trying to complete every outdoor block under an umbrella.
Make the plan yours
For children or anyone who needs a slower pace, keep one main activity each morning and one optional stop later. For this route, removing an observatory visit or the final shopping walk still leaves a complete day.
Before the trip, save the garden entrance, museum branch, hotel address and any paid booking confirmations. Put Monday and Tuesday closures on your calendar now. Once those are settled, leave the spaces between sights open enough to enjoy lunch and change your mind.
