Where to stay in Shanghai for your first visit
Short answer
Start your hotel search near People's Square or Jing'an Temple if you want a convenient base for a mixed sightseeing trip. Choose East Nanjing Road for repeated walks to the Bund, the Wukang Road area for neighbourhood wandering, or Lujiazui for the Pudong waterfront. Compare actual hotel entrances and metro walks before booking. Shanghai's district names cover much larger areas than these useful starting points.

Choose the station first
A hotel can be in the right district and still be inconvenient for your trip. "Jing'an" does not mean beside Jing'an Temple station. "Pudong" does not mean within walking distance of Shanghai Tower. "The Bund" in a hotel description is a reason to inspect the map, not a complete location.
For a three-night stay, pick the places you most want to see, then compare two station areas. Keep the same base unless an early departure or another concrete need makes a move worthwhile. Packing, checkout and moving bags can consume the morning you hoped to spend sightseeing.
The choices below are editorial recommendations based on transport access and the kind of day each area supports.

People's Square for a varied first trip
People's Square is a useful default if your plans mix museums, the Nanjing Road area and destinations elsewhere in Shanghai. Its metro station serves Lines 1, 2 and 8. Compare the hotel with the station exit you would actually use. A straight line to the station symbol can cross a park, a wide road or the full length of an underground concourse. Ask the hotel for a walking route from the relevant exit, especially if you need a lift.
Choose this area if you want flexibility more than a river view. Plan the evening's return journey as well as the walk out.
Do not choose a hotel here solely to be beside Shanghai Museum's permanent Chinese collections. East Nanjing Road for evenings near the Bund
Start with East Nanjing Road station if your priority is walking towards the waterfront after dinner. Lines 2 and 10 meet here, giving the area useful rail connections. There is a practical choice between being close to the water and close to the station. Compare both walks from the hotel's actual front door. If you expect several metro outings each day, a hotel nearer the station may serve you better than one whose main advantage is its address beside the river.
A "city view" is not a river view, and a "river view" does not tell you which direction the room faces. If the view is the reason for paying more, obtain the exact room-category description and ask whether the pictured view belongs to that category.
For light sleepers, ask about the room's position relative to roads, bars and building works. A higher floor or a courtyard-facing room is a request to discuss with the hotel, not a guarantee of quiet.
Jing'an Temple for a central base farther west
Jing'an Temple station serves Lines 2, 7 and 14. The nearby West Nanjing Road station serves Lines 2, 12 and 13, making both useful places to begin a hotel search. They are separate station areas, not interchangeable names for the same location. Shanghai's official area transport guide
Choose Jing'an Temple if you expect to divide your time between central sightseeing and streets farther west. You can put shopping and dinner near your hotel and make the Bund a planned outing. The West Nanjing Road area is another sensible shortlist if its particular hotel has the better entrance-to-platform walk.
For a late Pudong arrival, the night bus's Middle Yan'an Road/Huashan Road stop is a possible starting point for the final journey. Ask the hotel whether it is practical from that specific stop with your luggage. A hotel elsewhere in Jing'an may still need a taxi. Pudong Airport night-bus route
Wukang Road for days built around walking
The Wukang Road and Anfu Road area suits travellers who want time for streets, buildings and unplanned stops. Shanghai's official guide places Wukang Road in Xuhui and describes its residential buildings, lanes and historic houses. That is the appeal of choosing this area as a base. Wukang Road guide
Use Jiao Tong University station, 交通大学, on Lines 10 and 11 as one concrete search anchor, then inspect the walk to each property. Do not search the broad label "French Concession" and assume the resulting hotels are all clustered together. Official transport directions for the area
Choose this area when walking is an activity in its own right. Reconsider if most of your booked activities are across the river.
If a property is in an older building or a lane, ask about lift access, stairs between the road and reception, and where a taxi can stop. Building character does not tell you whether two suitcases or a pushchair will be easy to manage.
Lujiazui for a Pudong-focused stay
Lujiazui puts you on the Pudong side of the Huangpu River. Museum of Art Pudong is on this waterfront and gives directions from Lujiazui station on Line 2. Look carefully at the hotel map. A room overlooking the historic Bund is looking across the water; you need a transport crossing to visit that side. Do not judge a journey from the apparent distance between two pins on opposite banks.
Choose a hotel near the station or the particular riverfront stretch you want to use. Treat "Pudong" alone as too broad a filter. The same district name appears in airport hotels and urban hotel listings without making their daily journeys equivalent.
When an airport or Hongqiao hotel is worth it
An airport-area night can make sense after a very late landing or before an early flight. Confirm that any shuttle actually serves your airport and terminal, runs at the necessary hour and accepts your booking. A shuttle icon on a listing does not answer those questions.
Hongqiao is a separate decision. The Airport Link Line connects Pudong T1 & T2 with Hongqiao Airport T2 in about 40 minutes, but this is the train ride between stations. Compare two real hotels before paying
Open two listings for your actual dates, room occupancy and cancellation preference. Compare the total stay cost, including taxes, breakfast if needed, and any extra-bed charge. A nightly headline price can hide the difference that matters to your booking.
Then ask each hotel the same short questions:
- What is the recommended metro exit, walking route and lift route to reception?
- Can you check us in at our expected arrival time, including after midnight if necessary?
- Which documents, deposit and payment method will you require at check-in?
- For children or a third adult, is this exact room category permitted and what bedding is included?
- Does the booked category include the view, window, bathroom and bed arrangement we expect?
